Time machine for AI-assisted code
Vibe code
without losing control.
whydid automatically records every meaningful AI change to your project, explains why it happened, and gives you a safe way back — restore or fork any state, whenever you need to.
You can see what changed. You can’t always see why.
“AI changed a lot of my code. I don’t remember what happened, why it happened, or which change broke things.”
Nothing connects the two automatically. whydid sits between your prompt and your diff: what changed, why it changed, what state your project was in before it changed, and whether you can safely go back.
Every meaningful AI turn becomes a state you can inspect, compare, restore, or fork — a local, recoverable history of how your codebase actually evolved.
Not a mockup
The actual dashboard — not a rendering.
Every screen below is the real product’s own interface, captured live on the same example project as the walkthrough above. Nothing about the UI is staged — only the data is, and it’s clearly labeled, because what we’d otherwise be showing you is someone’s real private codebase.

Every checkpoint, oldest branches included — searchable, filterable by risk, one click from a full diff.

Grounded in your real history, with citations back to the exact checkpoint — never invented, and it says so when it doesn’t know.

The workflow
Two commands. Then it’s all dashboard.
The CLI exists for the handful of things that need it. Day to day, you’ll live in the dashboard — it does most of the work for you.
Init
Point it at any existing project. It detects git, scans your files respecting .gitignore, and captures state #1 in under a second.
Open your dashboard
Opens in your own browser, at a local address only your machine can reach — nothing hosted on our end, nothing sent anywhere. From here it's all clicks: Timeline, AI explanations, restore, fork.
Just keep coding
Checkpoints happen on their own as you work with your AI agent. Each one gets a real AI-written explanation — never fabricated, and it says so plainly when the reason genuinely isn't clear — visible in Timeline the moment it lands.
Undo or branch — one click
Every restore safety-snapshots your current work first, automatically — nothing is ever silently overwritten. Prefer the terminal? whydid restore and whydid fork do the same thing, for scripting or habit.
What’s on the panel
Every reading, plainly labeled.
Local-first
Source, history, and snapshots stay on your machine. The whydid backend never receives your code.
Bring your own key
Use your own Anthropic or OpenAI key. whydid pays no inference cost — and never logs or transmits the key itself.
No subscription
One license, yours for good. No monthly fee, no seat count, no usage meter creeping up on you.
Safe restore
Every restore snapshots what's currently on disk first. Nothing is silently overwritten. Nothing is ever lost.
Real diffs, deduplicated
Content-addressed object storage. Full unified diffs on demand — the actual before and after, not a description.
Works offline
Timeline, diff, restore, and fork all run with zero network connection, once you've activated your license.
Before you ask
The questions everyone asks first.
